Our Baker Tilly Advantage group supports small and midsized enterprises in achieving peak business performance. As an Accounting Technician, you will deliver accurate, timely, and tech‑enabled finance support across multiple clients. You’ll handle full‑cycle bookkeeping, payroll support, month‑end close, and compliance filings while collaborating directly with clients and internal managers to solve day‑to‑day accounting challenges.
Your role:
- Full‑cycle bookkeeping: Own A/P, A/R, bank/credit card feeds, and general ledger maintenance using cloud applications (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Xero) and related apps (e.g., Dext, Plooto, Wagepoint—or similar).
- Month‑end close: Prepare reconciliations, accruals/deferrals, and journal entries; perform variance analysis; maintain clean working papers.
- Payroll support: Assist with payroll processing and adjustments; prepare ROEs as required; coordinate year‑end payroll reconciliations.
- Year‑end slips & returns: Prepare basic T4/T4A information and support year‑end slip generation.
- Government filings: Prepare and file HST/GST returns, payroll remittances, and other routine filings (e.g., WSIB, EHT) on time and in compliance.
- Reporting: Produce monthly/quarterly financial statements and management reports (e.g., dashboards, KPIs) that are clear, accurate, and decision‑ready.
- Client collaboration: Respond to day‑to‑day inquiries, provide basic training on accounting systems, and flag issues early with practical recommendations.
- Quality & controls: Follow firm standards, document procedures, and help strengthen internal controls and data integrity across client files.
- Continuous improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline workflows (automation, bank rules, templates) and share best practices with the team.
- Issue escalation: Communicate risks, anomalies, or deadlines at risk to management promptly and partner on solutions.
What you bring to the table:
- 1+ years of hands‑on accounting experience, preferably in public accounting or professional services with multiple concurrent clients/files.
- Diploma/degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; CPA program enrollment or interest is an asset.
- Practical experience with cloud accounting platforms (QBO, Xero) and related ecosystems; ability to learn new apps quickly.
- Intermediate–advanced Excel (lookups, pivot tables, conditional formulas) and strong general systems aptitude.
- Working knowledge of ASPE basics and HST rules relevant to small/mid‑sized Canadian businesses.
- Strong organization and time management skills; able to prioritize and meet recurring deadlines across multiple engagements.
- Clear, professional communication—written and verbal—with a client‑first mindset and service orientation.
- High attention to detail, sound judgment, and commitment to confidentiality and data security.
Assets
- Experience with tools such as Dext/Hubdoc, Plooto, Wagepoint/ADP/Ceridian, Practice Management systems, or similar.
- Prior exposure to payroll year‑end workflows and slip preparation.
- Experience preparing working papers for review by senior staff/management.
- Knowledge of Ontario payroll compliance items (e.g., WSIB, EHT) and common small‑business sectors.
- Process improvement/automation mindset (e.g., setting up bank rules, templates, and standardized close checklists).
