Throne Speech Agricultural Highlights

Dec 19, 2008

While the economy dominated Prime Minister Harper's November 20, 2008 Throne speech, agricultural concerns were raised as well.  A number of election platform promises were highlighted in the speech such as the government reiterating its strong support of the existing supply management sectors, and it's support in international negotiations.  The government pledged to ensure freedom of choice for grain marketing in western Canada.

Other highlights include:

  • mention of strengthening oversight of food safety systems
  • a commitment to work in partnership with industry and other stakeholders in leading Canadians through this time of economic instability, and
  • reference to the government's plan to boost competitiveness and expand market opportunities through research, innovation, and increased international trade.

Additional information was not provided on two primary election promises:

  • the reduction in diesel taxes, and
  • a new agricultural flexibility program.
