Farmers across Canada are more than just producers of essential foods and materials – they’re also environmental stewards on the front lines of efforts to make agricultural practices more sustainable.
To help Ontario farmers maximize efficiency and protect the planet today and into the future, the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA) has announced a new funding program that encourages farms to reduce their energy costs and environmental footprint.
The program offers significant financial support for a range of energy-saving projects, including:
- Basic energy use assessments – 75% of costs, up to $10,000
- Detailed energy audits – 50% of costs, up to $50,000
- Energy efficiency improvements – 35% of costs, up to $90,000
(Eligible improvements include geothermal heating/cooling, high-efficiency motors, building envelope and ventilation upgrades, refrigeration and cooling upgrades, lighting, and grain drying improvements.)
Additional funding is available for water/wetland conservation projects and crops that support biodiversity, providing more ways for eligible farms to make a positive environmental impact.
Eligibility
In order to access funding through the program, farms must:
- File farm business taxes in Ontario and have a valid Farm Business Registration Number (FBRN) or exemption.
- Have a verified 4th or 5th Edition Environmental Farm Plan.
- Comply with all legal requirements for the duration of the project(s).
