Five in five with: Suzanne Kovach

What’s your background?

I began my career as an office manager at a construction company, where I was introduced to computers and accounting software. It came naturally to me and I really enjoyed the technology aspect. After working in industry for a few years, I returned to college as an adult student and obtained my Business Diploma in Information Technology. Since then, I have moved between working in industry and public accounting.

What keeps you busy outside the office?

My family, friends and pets. I love animals and spending time outdoors, just enjoying nature. My favourite place to unwind is sitting next to a crackling campfire – and maybe roasting some smores.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

I think I am most proud of having built a successful bookkeeping business.

What advice would you give someone starting a career in your field?

First and foremost, be prepared for continuous learning. Technology is constantly evolving, so you need to be willing to challenge yourself.

What are the qualities that make Baker Tilly Windsor unique?

Team members are always encouraged to develop their career paths while pursuing their professional passions. Being independently owned allows us to easily pivot and adapt. At the same time, as part of a network, we have access to resources not typically found at other firms.

How would you describe your contribution to Baker Tilly Windsor?

I joined the firm in 2018 to implement and manage the BT Advantage Team. Through this program, we provide our clients with cloud‑based solutions, encompassing everything from payroll and accounts payable/receivable to advanced financial reporting. In my time here, I think I have helped grow this part of our business and show the value it offers to clients.

If you weren’t in your current job, what profession would you pursue?

Most likely, I would have chosen a career in the medical field. I loved biology and the other sciences in high school. I suppose you could say now I help manage our clients’ financial health.

What does “Now, for tomorrow” (Baker Tilly’s mantra) mean to you?

It comes down to being there for our clients in the present, while helping guide them successfully into the future – whatever that looks like for them.

What does the future hold for you and your profession?

Change is the one constant in this profession, as in many others. Specifically, we need to keep pace with the ever‑evolving technology. Fortunately, I love the technology aspect of my role and working with the BT Advantage Team to move our clients to cloud-based services and solutions. Ultimately, this enables them to realize greater efficiencies and it increases collaboration with us, their trusted advisors.
