Key Responsibilities
Technical review
- Review completed T1 returns for accuracy, completeness, reasonableness, and proper documentation.
- Verify income slips, CRA data imports, deductions, credits, balances owing/refunds, and carryforward information.
- Review Northern Residents Deduction, travel claims, residency documentation, rental/business schedules, prior-year filings, and other higher-risk areas.
- Confirm that files are assembled and documented sufficiently for partner review, invoicing, signing, and release.
Coaching and staff support
- Provide timely feedback to preparers and co-op students.
- Answer technical questions and help preparers resolve routine issues.
- Identify recurring errors and recommend refresher training or process changes.
- Support onboarding and training for seasonal staff.
Quality control and escalation
- Ensure firm procedures are followed consistently for authorization forms, CRA data import, paperless files, review assembly, and client follow-up.
- Escalate unusual, sensitive, or high-risk matters to the partner/manager or Tax Operations Coordinator.
- Assist with CRA pre-assessment or post-assessment response preparation when required.
- Help maintain standard checklists, templates, and technical reference materials.
Workflow support
- Coordinate with the Tax Operations Coordinator to manage review queues and keep files moving.
- Prioritize older files, urgent client matters, and returns approaching filing deadlines.
- Communicate review status and blockers clearly.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 3 years of personal tax preparation experience preferred.
- Experience reviewing T1 returns and coaching junior staff.
- Strong knowledge of Northern Residents Deduction and travel claims is strongly preferred.
- CPA designation, CPA student status, or equivalent tax experience is an asset.
- Ability to work onsite and remain organized under peak-season pressure.
