Five in five with: Chris Button

1. What’s your background?
While studying and working at my accounting designation, I was also studying for my financial planning designation. This dual specialty gives me a unique perspective when helping clients increase their wealth.

2. What is your proudest professional accomplishment?
I was once able to help a widow earn about $30,000 tax free. She had very little and an almost empty company, but we put the pieces in place and she was ecstatic when she realized the income was hers, not the government’s. Since then, I have set up several other client scenarios with the same objective.

3. What’s your accounting superpower?
Looking at what the client wants and charting the path to achieve that goal. Also, leveraging the Baker Tilly network is a kind of superpower.

4. If you weren’t in your current job, what profession would you pursue?
When I was an accounting student, my wife and I bought a very old house. With little money to spend on renovations, I learned how much I liked doing most indoor renovations. With that in mind, I think I would be happy as an electrician or a plumber. When you think about it, those professions are similar to accounting: there’s a given set of rules, a given set of facts and a given goal. From there, all you have to do is solve the problem.

5. What are the qualities that make Baker Tilly Canada unique?
With hundreds of partners and thousands of team members, Baker Tilly Canada has all the experience a client could ask for. By working with those professionals, clients from anywhere in Canada can realistically achieve their goals.
