Five in five with: Craig Hoover

Craig Hoover Apr 21, 2021

What’s your background?
I have a Bachelor of Science degree (Honours in Biological Sciences) with a strong emphasis on statistics from the University of Guelph. My first professional job was as a market analyst for a large water treatment technology company. From there, I moved over to professional consulting at a Big Four firm.

What keeps you busy outside the office?
Most of my time is spent with my wife and two young kids. Any other spare time I have is spent on the golf course.

What advice would you give someone starting a career in your field?
Make sure you connect with people in the role you want. Learn from those who have already been where you’re going.

What are the qualities that make Baker Tilly Windsor unique?
We are nimble like a small firm, but also have all the specialty services (and, in some cases, more) of a Big Four firm.

How would you describe your contribution to Baker Tilly Windsor?
My group provides clients with the expertise to access more than 200 government incentives (tax credits, grants and interest-free loans), so they can grow their businesses, innovate and hold their own with competitors all over the globe. We are involved with the application process from cradle to grave, starting with the earliest preparation and concluding on the day they receive their incentive.

If you weren’t in your current job, what profession would you pursue?
I would likely be a stockbroker or portfolio manager. I’ve always had an interest in the stock market and trading is a longstanding hobby of mine.

What does “Now, for tomorrow” (Baker Tilly’s mantra) mean to you?
Let’s plan today, so we can meet our future goals.

What does the future hold for you and your profession?
I think my practice will be critical in helping our clients rebound from the recession of 2020. My gut feeling is there will be lots of stimulus from the government to spur economic growth and we have the expertise to help our clients access these funds.
