Biography

Thomas received his Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Guelph in 1999 majoring in Agricultural Economics. Thomas joined Baker Tilly GWD (formerly Collins Barrow) in 2001 as an articling student, obtained his Chartered Professional Accountant designation in 2005 and became a partner in 2011.

Thomas has a wide range of experience in assurance, tax and consulting services with a particular focus in owner-managed businesses in the agricultural/agribusiness, trades and manufacturing sectors. Thomas has employed this experience to write many articles for Baker Tilly/Collins Barrow publications over the years.

Thomas is an active member in the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors (CAFA) - currently serving as chair of the association's Wellington Country chapter and is also on the National Board of Directors.

In his spare time, Thomas enjoys spending time with his family, coaching, reading, travelling, and sports.

  • The CRA acknowledges impact of bare trust filings on Canadians

    On March 28, 2024, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced it would no longer require bare trusts to file a T3 Income Tax and Information Return (T3 return) ⁠–⁠ including Schedule 15 (Beneficial Ownership Information of a Trust) ⁠–⁠ for the 2023 tax year unless the CRA makes a direct request for these filings. This announcement recognizes the new reporting requirements for bare trusts have had an unintended impact on Canadians.
