In the Spotlight with Dan Roberts

Tell us about yourself.

I am a Tax Partner in the Vancouver office. I started at the firm in 2001, left in 2006 and then rejoined the firm in 2013 to lead the Cross-Border Tax Group. I am married with four children so I spend a lot of my time outside of work at swim practice, soccer practice or piano lessons.

Has there been anything positive you have witnessed/seen from the recent crisis?

The pandemic has really reinforced and reminded me to appreciate what we have. We live in a beautiful city and work in a challenging and reward profession. Personally, the pandemic has allowed me to spend a lot more time with my family which has been great.

How do you think Baker Tilly WM will need to adapt to the new world following COVID-19?

The pandemic forced Baker Tilly WM, and many other companies, to learn how to work from home. It was a trial by fire for many. Fortunately, we were well prepared and the transition went smoothly but I think that the working from home environment will be a key element of the new world.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the accounting industry?

There are many options for young people today so attracting and retaining top staff is one of the biggest challenges facing the accounting industry.

What is the best advice anyone has given you?

The best investment you can make is in yourself. This applies to your personal life, health as well as your career. Always be looking to improve.
