In the Spotlight with Richard MacDonald

Tell us about yourself.

I am a partner in the tax group with a focus on public companies, as well as international taxation. I grew up in Montreal and moved out to British Columbia for university. Once university was completed, I stayed in BC. I now live in North Vancouver and spend much of my free time with my wife and three children.

If you were not an accountant what would you have liked to be and why?

I would have been a university lecturer.  I participated in the CPA Canada In-depth Taxation program and quite enjoyed helping others learn.

Outside of work, what keeps you busy?

Family mostly and sports. I enjoy skiing up at Grouse or ice hockey.  I also volunteer with the support committee for my two teenagers Cadet Corps in North Vancouver.

What is the best advice anyone has given you?

My mentor when I was working in London, England told me that to progress in your career you have to already be functioning in your future role. I have tried to instill this in any person I have had the opportunity to mentor or coach.

What personality traits make a good leader?

There are many traits a good leader needs. One of the most important is rolling up your sleeves and taking on any task needed to help the team achieve its goals. Your team members will notice that you aren’t afraid to do this and it also keeps you in touch with what they are facing.
