In the Spotlight with Masato Oki
Tell us about yourself.
I joined the firm in 1997 as an articling student and have spent my entire professional career at the firm. A partner in our Audit & Accounting Group, I specialize in dealing with family businesses. More than just a historian of year-ends, I strive to be a trusted advisor to my clients.
If you were not an accountant what would you have liked to be and why?
If I were not an accountant, I think I would have enjoyed a career in psychology. People fascinate me and I truly enjoy listening to what others have to say. These are useful traits to have when working in psychology and my natural curiosity and desire to help others would have been fulfilled in this profession.
Outside of work, what keeps you busy?
Outside of work, my two kids keep me very busy. Between dance, soccer, piano, tennis, and swimming, their activities are a handful. I am their #1 fan though so love watching them at their recitals and competitions.
What does "Now, for tomorrow" mean to you?
To me, “Now, for tomorrow” means being proactive in everything we do. Life is full of distractions and reasons to procrastinate which can lead to a reactive state of mind. The more we can be mindful to focus on tomorrow today, the more proactive we can be to ensure future success in all aspects of our lives.
What other leaders do you look up to?
I’ve had the honour and privilege to work with some incredible leaders over the years – both individuals who are clients, and leaders within the firm. Observing how they are able to garner the respect of all by walking that fine line between business and friendship is awe-inspiring. In all cases, the impact on their organizations’ legacies have been profound.
